A five-page pilot at one of India’s largest pharma companies

A brand team at one of India’s largest pharmaceutical companies ran a small set of pages through Collateral Advisor before MLR. On one page it gave the team a sharper way to see its own work. On another it arrived at the same judgement as the team’s own medical experts.

The situation

A brand team sits with a near-final visual aid, days before it goes for MLR. Every page carries the company name into thousands of doctor calls, where a medical representative has two to three minutes to present data credibly and land a clear message. The team knows the material is close. What it cannot easily see, on its own pages, is whether every claim, every visual, and every line of messaging would hold up to an experienced reviewer reading it cold.

The real question for a brand team is whether it can stand behind every page with confidence before the material goes forward. Research across 188 doctors in 11 specialties found that clinical updates in product literature drive brand recall, and that doctors rank representative communication skills as the single most important factor in promotional effectiveness (Kumar and Alvi, 2020). The quality of the page shapes the quality of the conversation it supports.

The pilot

The team chose five pages and ran them through Collateral Advisor, a structured five-dimension review of every page: medical accuracy, regulatory compliance, visual design, messaging clarity, and content structure. Nothing changed in the team’s own process. The review sat alongside it as a structured second eye, before the material went forward.

Two moments from that pilot show what a structured second eye adds.

A sharper way to see

It clarified an open question

On one page, a finding clarified something the team had been unsure about, and the team chose to act on it. The value was a sharper way to see a page the team already knew well.

More defensible

It matched their experts’ judgement

On another page, the review arrived at the same change the team’s own medical reviewers would later recommend. An independent read reaching the same judgement as the team’s experts is what lets a team stand behind a page with more confidence.

Neither moment was a verdict. The product does not approve a page or reject it. It offers an experienced reviewer’s structured perception, and the decision stays with the team. What the team gained across both pages was the same thing: more confidence that what it was sending forward could stand up to scrutiny.

We piloted five pages. On one, we directly followed a suggestion that clarified something our team had been unsure about. On another, the portal had also flagged the same change our medical team recommended.

From pilot to wider use

The pilot did not stay a one-time test. The team kept bringing work to the review, several brands across more than a dozen runs in a single sitting. A team brings its real, in-progress pages to a review only when it trusts what the review gives back.

The team then moved to fold the review into visual-aid preparation for the coming quarter, with access extending to each division. The decision to subscribe followed an endorsement from the business unit head to the team.

The takeaway

On one page the review gave the team a sharper way to see its own work. On another it arrived at the same judgement as the team’s medical experts, which let the team stand behind the page with more confidence. Collateral Advisor is an assistant, never an authority. It offers an experienced reviewer’s structured perception, and the final decision stays with the team and its Medical, Legal, and Regulatory reviewers. What it leaves behind is a brand team that can send its work forward more defensibly.
